Eagles News June 21- End of School Year
Dear Parent, Guardians and Eagles,
Can you believe this is the last week of school? Thank you so much for supporting your child's education over the past 3.5 months! Whether your Eagle has completed all activities or some activities, I hope your child has been been growing in their abilities to read, write, understand math concepts, appreciate God's gifts to us and has new ways to care for the environment and themselves through mindfulness. Providing these opportunities with personalized feedback and assessment was the goal of the activities in the Eagles At Home Learning Hapara Workspace that I have provided to students each week.
Our workspace this week has two fun activities. The first one is a chance to take a virtual field trip to four different locations. You can explore the CN Tower, Canada's Wonderland amusement park, Black Creek Pioneer Village or the Museum of Nature. After the field trip(s), there is a journal activity where students can write a paragraph that tells about their adventure. The second activity is a Flipgrid video where students get to show their classmates a talent. There are a lot of ideas on the Flipgrid explanation, but keep it to five minutes or less. On Wednesday, during our final Google Meet at 10am we will get to watch our very own "Eagles Got Talent" show! There may even be surprize talent videos by Mrs. Spinella and Mme Gavan! In column 4, there is a celebration of Canada that can be explored just in advance of our country's birthday on July 1st.
As the school year draws to a close, you will be picking up your children's school items which are located in the gym on Monday or Tuesday (a schedule has been sent out by school email). Please remember to drop off your child's math textbook (if they attended school on March 13) and any library books that are still at home. This has been a challenging year for everyone and having it end without the usual goodbye hugs is heartbreaking, however, as I watched the children's personalized Memory Book slideshows this past week, I was touched. Many students reflected on various activities that we did during the school year and the most common adjective describing them was, "fun".
Please give your child a great big hug from me, have a wonderful summer, keep healthy and safe.
Take care,
Charlene Spinella

Eagles News June 15-23
I am really excited about the activities I have prepared for you for this week! In math there are super fun motion geometry activities. Remember slides, flips and turns from grade 2? Well, in grade 3, we use the official math terms, translations, reflections and rotations! There is also a wonderful end of year memory book slideshow for you to personalize and activities to get ready for Father's Day. Also check out my Virtual Mindfulness Classroom in column 2. Mrs. Mertz should be contacting families about coming into the school next week to collect belongings. All of your things have been put in a bag and are in the gym, ready for pickup. They are just waiting on the yearbooks. If you have any library books or you took home a Math Makes Sense math textbook on March 13, please bring those back and drop them off at the school.
I look forward to seeing all the Eagles on Wednesday at 10:00am in our Google Hangout! Have an awesome week Eagles!!

Eagles Grade 3 News June 8-15
Dear Grade 3 Eagles and Families,
I hope everyone in your home is healthy and happy. It is time for another week to begin and with that comes another update of activities for our Eagles. We are looking forward to the following adventures for June 8- 15. In Math students will be exploring directional movement on a grid which lends itself nicely to treasure hunting! There is also a link to the website, Code.org, which we typically introduce at school during the Hour of Code and gives students the opportunity to try simple coding. It would also be a good time for students to look over assignments from previous weeks and finish any that have not been completed. The language instruction this week revolves around reading from a wide variety of texts that have been compiled into a class "Virtual Library", The common theme in the texts is diversity and social justice. Students are encouraged to read along with as many as they can, and at least three. They will then choose two books to write into a paragraph reading responses. In Science, students can complete a short online quiz to see what they have learned about soil last week. The quiz is from CBC Kids which is worth exploring in more detail. For students wanting more, there are extra language games in the fourth column on Hapara that are fun ways of reviewing a variety of concepts. Of course we will meet as usual on Wednesday at 10:00 am and I am always willing to respond to any questions you may have, I am very proud of all the Eagles who are using their time to continue learning and look forward to sending more feedback on assignments that I receive this week. Please give your child a great big hug and make sure they know how much I miss them!
Take care,
Mrs Spinella

Class News June 1- June 8
Dear Grade 3 Eagle Families,
Can you believe it is June already? ! I wonder what the probability of snow is this week? Is it likely? Well, this week in math students will be learning about probability language, fractional representation of the likelihood of certain outcomes and taking part in probability experiments. In language, they will be using non-fiction texts and media to gather information about soils and plants. There is a slideshow and then a Flipgrid for them to "show what you know". In column 4 of Hapara, students can add more photos of flowers to our group slideshow. Thank you to everyone who has done this already. In Column 2 of our Hapara workspace, students will find our Virtual Classroom and can check out the hidden links in math, reading, games, yoga and religion. Please continue to encourage your child to read every day. I look forward to our class Google Hangout on Wednesday at 10:00am! Last week's joke telling activity was a big hit, so we are doing it again.
As always, please send me an email if you or your child has questions or difficulty navigating this week's activities. Have a great week and take a moment to click on the link below, to our Virtual Classroom, and check out the hidden links.

Class News May 25 - June 1
Dear Parents and Eagles,
I hope this week finds you well. I want to express my thanks to you for continuing to support your child's learning during this time of Distance Education. I appreciate that it is challenging for everyone and my goal is to provide high quality activities that will help advance your child's developing skills in math and language. Of course, picking up a good book, helping out the family and being physically active is valuable to your child's health as well. If your child is finding that the activities I provide take more than 5 hours a week, I would appreciate knowing, so that adjustments can be made. Timelines are a suggestion and assignments will be accepted at any point. This week I am introducing a new Virtual Classroom. You can check it out on the Hapara card in Column 2, on the link in Twitter or on the link attached to this email. By clicking on various objects you will see links to some of this week's activities.
Students will be completing assignments on making change and solving math problems with money. We will practice some mindfulness techniques and reflect on kindness with Flipgrid videos. Students will add a slide to a cooperative slideshow about flowers of Ottawa which I have started. Finally, we will think about Media and the purposes it serves. Of course, on Wed. at 10:00 am we will gather together for our weekly Google Hangout. This week students should be ready to tell us a riddle or joke. We want to spread the smiles to everyone. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1B4TMH0LAZBT7pNmURygHYMIcpv3jLDci5298J41FxCg/edit?usp=sharing

Week of May 18-25
Although today, Monday, May 18 is a stat-holiday, "Victoria Day" which is in honour of our Queen's birthday, I have posted the week's activities for anyone who wants to get a head start! This week we will dive into money and flowering plants. As usual, students will start in Column 2 and then move on to the activities in Column 3. Students may find it useful to use some real coins but there is also a link to a virtual money manipulative in Column 2.
This time of year we see many plants starting to grow. We will explore the parts of plants, their purposes and the life cycle of plants. Students will read both non-fiction texts and poetry on the topic of plants. They will also use their artistic skills to show what they know. There is not a new Flipgrid topic , but I suggest students could go back to finish any overdue videos and watching any new videos their classmates have recently posted. As usual, we will meet on Wednesday at 10:00am. Email invites have been sent to students already. We will play a money Kahoot together. Have an awesome week with your families and keep safe!

WEEK OF MAY 11 - MAY 18
Dear Eagles and families,
Mothers of the Eagles, I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day with your family and enjoyed the special French and English creations they made for you! This week we will continue learning about measurement in math. First, students will go through the blue math cards in Column 2 including videos, songs, games and worksheets, then try the LEGO activity and the MathUp questions in Column 3. If you do not have LEGO blocks, no problem, your child can draw the LEGO blocks that will solve the activities instead. There is an option to take photos of each polygon constructed and add the photos to the slideshow, or to have an adult check over the solution instead. Please have your child choose whichever process works best for them. If you want more math practice there is an optional Zorbits activity in your child's "backpack" when they log into Zorbits on the Student Portal. In Reading, there is a non-fiction article about Bees and Plants in Column 2. The comprehension questions are in a Google Form in Column 3. Remember to have your child follow the directions very carefully when they do the form and press Submit after the final question. Of course, they also always come back and press Submit in Hapara whenever they complete an activity. Finally they will be exploring a hyperdoc in Column 2 called "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch". Students will find links to many articles and websites that will teach them about this major environmental problem and what can be done to help. They will demonstrate their new knowledge by creating a Flipgrid video where they either read a paragraph about the topic, or show and explain a poster / item that they have created. about this topic. The class will meet again on Wednesday at 10:00am on Google Hangout, but if anyone has any questions ahead of time, please send me an email. Have a great week, Eagles!

WEEK OF MAY 4 - MAY 10
Dear Eagles and their families,
This week activities will be available on the Student Portal in our Hapara Workspace as of Monday, May 4. It is important to realize that although new activities are posted each week and deadlines are attached, the deadlines are flexible and students can ALWAYS submit any activity whenever they finish. In these extremely unique circumstances, the goal is for students to continue their learning and everyone's pace will vary due to individual circumstances. This week the activities include an exploration of measurement using cm, m and Km as well as an introduction to the concept of perimeter. For the Home Measurement Activity, students will need to use a tool such as a ruler or tape measure. Please ensure they are made with Metric units of length. In Oral Language there is a "Secret Show and Tell" Flipgrid where students will write five clues that describe an item of their choice which is reveal at the end of their video. In reading students need to read and answer the comprehension questions for AT LEAST one Raz-Kids story, although students are continually encouraged to do some reading every day. There are a few options for students who are preparing for Mother's Day on May 10. A brief science video and review questions about skyscrapers is also available this week. Our class will meet on Wednesday at 10:00am for our usual Google Hangout. An invitation email has been sent to all the Eagles and a reminder will come 10 minutes before the meeting time. Please refer to our class Twitter account @SpinellasEagles for a detailed tweet about the Catholic Education Week Theme "Igniting Hope". Monday's suggestion is to "send a message of hope to someone in your family". Have a wonderful, safe week with your loved ones!

THE WEEK OF APRIL 27- MAY 4
Dear Parents of the Grade 3 Eagles,
I hope that this email finds you and your family healthy and happy. Students are reminded that this week's activities have been uploaded into Hapara (on the St Emily Student Portal) and will be accessible on Monday morning. We will also be meeting at our regular 10am time on Wednesday and an email invite will arrive at your child's ocsbstudent.ca email address 10 minutes prior to the start of the meeting. The Hapara Math activities this week involve linking division with multiplication. There are teaching videos and practice activities (textbook, Math Makes Sense workbook pages) posted in column 2 under Math. Your child can do as much of these activities as are needed to help them acquire this new concept. In column 3 there is a Zorbits assignment and a Google Form assignment on this topic that will allow students to demonstrate their understanding. In Religion/Oral Language, column 2, there is a hyperdoc with links to various environmental topics. After exploring these links, the students will be creating a short oral response with 3-4 things they learned and 2-3 ways children can help our planet and then recording it on a website called Flipgrid. The link is provided and the videos are moderated/approved by me before they are posted. Students can also watch their classmates' videos and record short positive feedback comments. In Reading this week there is a story called "Waiting for the Tulips", with attached multiple choice and short answer questions, in column 3. Of course students are encouraged to read every day either from RazKids, Sora or any book of their choosing. Thank you for everything that you are doing with your children to help them grow in all areas of learning. Please feel free to respond with any questions you may have after pre-viewing the activities. As usual the due-dates are a guideline and students can always submit work from previous weeks without any late penalty.

The Week of April 20-27
Welcome to Earth Week, Eagles! On Wednesday we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Caring for our environment is the focus for activities in language this week. When you go into your Hapara icon on the St Emily Student Portal and open At-Home Learning For Mrs. Spinella's Class, you will find a song and short film to start you thinking about how amazing all of God's creations are and what we can do to help care for them. In column 4 there is also a link to a time capsule that you may want to try. It is completely optional and would need to be printed at your home.
Next scroll down to the math activities. This week you will be continuing with multiplication strategies and completing word problems as well. First look at the videos, songs and games in column 2. You may also want to try some Zorbits and Math Makes Sense textbook activities for more practice before you start the slideshow in column 3. (The links to Zorbits is through your Student Portal and links to MathUp and Math Makes Sense were posted last week in math. You can always scroll down to see the activities from previous weeks.) After exploring all the activities there is a slideshow in column 3 for you to complete. Do ALL your work directly on the slideshow and then submit it at the end through the Hapara submit button. New this week in column 4 you will find a link to a class Kahoot game. Play it whenever you wish but please choose a nickname that includes your real name so that I know how awesome you are doing. For example I could be SuperSpinella.
In language we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! We will be connecting some research about the importance of trees with the classic story "The Lorax" published in 1971 by Dr. Seuss! Your written assignment in column 3 is to use your letter writing skills to help the Earth by convincing the Lorax that he should stop cutting down all the trees. In column 4 you will also find 50 optional Earth Day activities that you may want to try. If you do, take a pic and share on our Twitter feed or bring it to Wednesday's 10am Google Hangout to show your classmates. For our Hangout, make sure you have a paper and pencil or whiteboard because we will play another live Kahoot together!
Have a wonderful week and please remember only press the Submit button in Hapara when you are completely finished an assignment. I look forward to seeing your shining faces on Wednesday at 10:00am!
Take Care Eagles!

September News
Welcome to Our Class
My name is Charlene Spinella and I will be your child’s English teacher this year. I am looking forward to working together with you as partners in educating your child. Our classroom is located in Portable 1, which is next to the bus lane fence. I know many of you will have questions about our class schedule, curriculum and routines. These will be covered on Parent Program Night which will be held on an evening later in September.
School Supplies:
Although the school does provide school supplies for children to use (pencils, gluesticks, notebooks, duotangs, scissors, coloured pencils, highlighters, markers, crayons, rulers), some children like to bring their own. It is very helpful if you can label each piece with their name, so items are not confused.
Some items that you may want to put in your child’s pencil case might be 2 pencils, a large glue stick and whiteboard markers with erasers. We have an electric pencil sharpener. Please do not send personal pencil sharpeners as they create a mess and distract many children from beginning their assignments. Donations of hand sanitizer, large ziplock bags and tissue boxes are welcomed now and throughout the year.
Requested items: To assist in keeping the classroom's floors clean, each child needs a pair of indoor shoes to leave at school that will be suitable for gym class. Running shoes are your best choice. If your child attends the before and after school program, it would be ideal to have a pair that can remain in our classroom. Also each child needs a pair of headphones (in a labeled plastic bag)for computer use. Please ensure they fit properly and are comfortable before sending them.
Library: We will sign books out of the learning commons once a week and students will write a reminder in their agendas. New books may not be signed out until the previous books have been returned. Each child may choose 2 English books and 1 French book each week.
Lunches and Snacks: St. Emily is a nut free school and we have students in our class with nut allergies (including tree nuts). Please do not pack your child anything that may contain nuts of any kind. If you are using "Wow Butter", a sticker should be attached. In order to encourage stewardship for the Earth, we practice “Boomerang Lunches”, which means most food packaging/garbage will return home. This will also give you a clear idea of how much your child is eating. We do recycle juice boxes, fruit cups and yoghurt containers, but everyone is encouraged to pack food in reusable packaging. Please send your child with a refillable water bottle to keep hydrated and limit their need for trips to the water fountain.
Agendas: Each child receives an agenda. Students will use these to write homework and reminders. It has been placed in a large ziploc for protection from spills and to provide a space for notes/ tests etc. Do not put it in a binder as this will make your child's backpack overcrowded. Please check the agenda every night and initial it, so I know you have seen it. Tonight there are many papers. Please return your completed information sheets as soon as possible. You can check out classroom events and news by referring to our class Twitter page @SpinellasEagles.
Homework: The homework folder is usually sent home on Mondays with an assignment to be returned no later than Friday. Students are always encouraged to read at home every night for at least 15 minutes. This can be RazKids online reading, chapter books, magazines or any other material your child enjoys. There are also many other useful websites/learning games on the St. Emily Student Portal. emi.ocsb.ca
I hope this information will be of help as your child starts his or her first days of grade 3. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. The easiest way is a message on the agenda page or a note in the agenda ziplock. You can also call the school at 613-825-4300 and I will return your call as soon as possible.
I am looking forward to a fantastic year!
